poetry 2017 / 044

via NaPoWriMo

Our prompt for Day Five. In honor of Mary Oliver’s work, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that is based in the natural world: it could be about a particular plant, animal, or a particular landscape. But it should be about a slice of the natural world that you have personally experienced and optimally, one that you have experienced often. Try to incorporate specific details while also stating why you find the chosen place or plant/animal meaningful.

Old Oak

ancient, hollow
a hole at the bottom
where once a root breached a stone.
We wriggle through
aged five, seven, eight
climb the inside of the damp earth pipe
where fragments of heartwood still cling
to the sturdy trunk
emerge onto the canopy of leaves
at one with the birds and the sky
and the cooing of wood pigeons
hidden from prying eyes
breathing in the scent of nurture
until tea-time
