hard snow
stubborn as a skid mark

an old man
settled in the lee
of a supermarket wall
and the comforting bulk
of a road grit bunker,
his dog wrapped in a blanket
a bull terrier burrito.
He thanks me for the gift
and I want to offer him a bed,
a hot meal, a shower.
Instead I go home to all three
and worry about the money spent
of creating art.
